Portable Access Ramps
Portable access ramps are so easy to use and generally improve the quality of life for wheelchair-users. Being able to access buildings or vehicles is a very trying task if you cannot walk and for a growing number of Americans, access can be provided with the aid of portable access ramps.
Making portable access ramps
You may not have the carpentry or building skills to make a portable access ramp yourself but you may know someone who is experienced in building or perhaps there is someone who is just practical and can turn their hand on anything. A very simple portable access ramp can be created from wood and the materials can be obtained from any hardware store. Some portable access ramps are just two planks of wood but if that is what you decide to use, ensure the wooden beams are wide enough and strong enough to be able to take the weight of the wheelchair. Many choose to create a wedge shape as an access ramp in a wood material and this will be more sturdy and robust as well as not that much more difficult to make. These will have to be maintained in some way otherwise the wood will just disintegrate or rot so they will have to be weatherproofed or varnished.
Access ramps for autos
Portable access ramps for autos can make it very easy for a wheelchair to gain access to a van or larger auto. The portable access ramps are generally made from aluminum, a lightweight but robust material that is sturdy and dependable. Aluminum can take a lot of weight due to its unique molecular structure and the pricing is cost-effective too.
Foldaway access ramps
There are so many portable access ramps that you are completely spoilt for choice. One that folds in half, or termed bi-fold, is very common and these are extremely easy to set up and use. Simply fold out and it is ready to take the wheelchair. This style of access ramp is very portable in design and lightweight and can be obtained in a range of sizes.
Telescopic access ramps
Adjustable portable access ramps may be an option to consider, especially if the wheelchair is not a standard size and is wider than average. The telescopic ramp will extend in width to accept the wheelchair safely. The adjustability is not just in width, but length too, so they are very practical for a range of uses on a daily basis.
